Food & Drink

Playgroup is very conscious of the role it plays in the diets of the children who attend and therefore strives to make snacks healthy and interesting. All dietary needs, such as allergies, are catered for and are clearly displayed on our register which is checked each morning as part of our daily routine. We always encourage children to taste and try new things but dislikes are taken into consideration. The day’s snack is written on the board in the cloakroom.

Children are given free access to water throughout the session. We try to sit down together for snack at around 10.45am.  When we have larger numbers we operate a “rolling snack bar” (9.45am-10.30am) whereby children choose when to have their snack. Snacks are all “tooth kind” and usually include a carbohydrate choice alongside fruit, vegetables or salad. Milk and water are available to drink.

Throughout the year we have various themes running for a week at a time in Playgroup and where possible we link in that theme or subject with snack time, extending the educational experience. Examples of this, which the children thoroughly enjoy, include:

• Chinese New Year, where we might sample noodles, stir-fried vegetables, prawn crackers and fortune cookies
• Diwali Festival of Light, where we might try some flavoured rice dishes, poppadums and explore the different aromas and flavours of spices
• Shrove Tuesday, enjoying pancakes
• Easter, where we might have hot cross buns

If it is a child’s birthday, or will be later that week, it has become something of a custom for the child to bring in a small cake or similar treat for snack that day to share with their friends, who always sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to the birthday boy or girl.
